Another New Track Results In Another Top 20 For Spencer Boyd

Concord, NC (May 20, 2017) – Spencer Boyd followed up his season debut with another 20th place finish under the lights Friday night. Although Spencer is quite familiar with racing at Charlotte Motor Speedway having run Go-Karts, Bandoleros, and Legends cars there, these were his first laps on the big track. “This place is fast,” said Boyd after Thursday’s practice sessions. “Although I’ve turned laps at Daytona where the speeds are higher, this track just feels faster. With the bumpy racing surface and a narrow racing groove, I knew I had to count on advice from my driver coach, Todd Bodine, to find the best way to drive it. We worked at it in both (practice) sessions and felt we had a truck that could qualify in on time.” Spencer would qualify in on time, laying down a lap that would have him start the 134 lap North Carolina Education 200 in 27th position as Christopher Bell would grab the pole in the No. 4 truck. Soon after the start of the race the pole sitter would find trouble foregoing his lead to Kyle Busch. Busch would eventually put Spencer one lap down on lap 30 while the number 50 truck narrowly missed the lucky dog on lap 32 by one spot when Austin Cindric went for a spin coming out of turn 4. Boyd would finish the first 40 lap segment right where he started in 27th position. Between stages, Boyd would bring his machine in for four fresh Goodyears and some adjustments to help tighten up the truck with the changing nighttime environment. Restarting Stage 2 in 28th, Boyd would quickly gain a spot backing by passing the No. 1 truck of Jordan Anderson. He would continue to pass lead lap trucks and combined with some cautions found himself in 23rd and in the lucky dog position at the end of Stage 2. With more adjustments, fresh tires and the truck back on the lead lap, Boyd started the final stage of the race in 21st with 86 laps to go in the race. A good pit strategy would keep Boyd’s Grunt Style/Ranch Hand truck filled with Sunoco race fuel so when the No. 92 truck marked up the restart zone wall on lap 101 to bring out the caution flag, Spencer would be able to jump up to a race high 13th position with 28 to go. He would remain on the lead lap for much of the 3rd and final stage only to be put one lap down with 10 to go at the hands of eventual race winner, Kyle Busch. A sweaty Spencer Boyd would climb from the cockpit after finishing in 20th place for the second week in a row, “That was fun! But man is it hot! It felt good to pass the trucks I couldn’t last week. It felt rewarding being competitive here too. I’d like to thank our new sponsor Ranch Hand for being here watching from the pit box, of course my Grunt Style team up in Chicago, Nonna’s Restaurant for feeding us this week, Excessive Carts, and Sam Bass for joining me on this ride.” The 20th-place finish was Boyd’s third top 20 in NASCAR Camping World Truck Series competition with five starts to his name.
